Surrey's Red Hot Rollers Struck Gold
July 2, 2008
Special Olympics Surrey ten-pin bowling squad - who train every Tuesday night at the Charrington Bowl - 'Struck Gold' at the Royal Borough of Kingston Disabled Ten Pin Bowling Tournament in May 08. 21 teams took part and the Special Olympics Surrey (SOS) teams where called the Red Hot Rollers and Beginners Luck.
At the end of the first game, the Red Hot Rollers were 5 points behind the leaders and at this stage they just couldn't get focused; Jane Beasleigh, the SOS head coach took the Red Hot Rollers off the lane and spoke to them individually and then as a team. She could see that they were getting tired. She just reminded them how good they were and that they could win the tournament if they just got focused. On frame 7 in the last game they were now 50 points behind the leaders but then the strikes started to happen.
Every member of the team found new energies and Jack Chapman, the last man to roll put 3 strikes into the pocket on the tenth frame and the SOS Red Hot Rollers won the tournament by 18 pins. The winning team consisted of Paul Starling, Rebecca Giddy, Jonathan Frett, Russell Leatherby, Michelle Leatherby and Jack Chapman; and the athletes Alice Bell, Karen Ossthuizen, Alan Booth, Philip Jordan, Jo Rylah and Gary Sharples were the Beginners Luck team. Jo Rylah was the Team Captain for the day which she thoroughly enjoyed.
